Plumber Suggestions on Pet-Proofing Pipes

Playing in the mud may be a dog’s dream, but it could also trigger plumbing problems.

A recent American Pet Product Association study suggests that about 68% of homeowners have family pets, which is about 100 million homes across the country.

Below are a few steps to take when pet-proofing plumbing. Be sure to follow this guide so that worrying about pet interactions with pipes and plumbing can become a thing of the past.

Cover exposed plumbing

Just as young kids are curious about cupboards, doors, and other dangerous areas in the home, the same can be said for pets. If a pet dog chews on or plays with an exposed pipe, repairing damage can be expensive. It may also damage the rest of the plumbing system at home and even cause injury to pets. Avoid unnecessary veterinary and repair expenses by covering up exposed pipes.

Give pets enough water to drink

Thirsty pet dogs tend to go to the bathroom to drink from the toilet if they do not have access to enough water. Avoid this by giving pets plenty of water so they will keep out of the toilet to drink. Refill the pet's water dish at least twice daily.

Wash dirty animals outdoors

Playing in the mud may be a dog’s dream, but it could also trigger plumbing problems. When pets are washed in the tub, muddy pet hair will likely get caught in the drain and create a clog in the pipeline.

To prevent such clogs, try to wash or rinse pets outdoors to get rid of the most awful of the crud. When the majority of the mud has been rinsed off, take them inside to finish washing. If dogs and cats can generally be washed outside, no pipes are at risk for damage.

Keep cleaning chemicals out of reach

If animals ingest cleaning products, they can make themselves seriously ill. Ensure that all products are either up and out of reach or behind secured cupboard doors.

Avoid chemical drain cleaners. These chemicals are toxic to family pets and damage plumbing.
